    For immediate release:
West Hartford Art League moving offices and gallery space

The West Hartford Art League will be moving – temporarily – to new digs in Blueback Square so structural work can be done to the 250 year old Saltbox building that has housed its administrative offices and Saltbox gallery since 1976.   The Clubhouse gallery and classroom space on Buena Vista Road, as well as the Schoolhouse building on Mountain Road, will remain unaffected and will continue to be hold daily art classes.
The Art Leagues’ new address will be 69 Raymond Rd, in Blueback Square, across from Whole Foods market. The new space will be use as a combination of office and gallery space for exhibitions until the Saltbox renovations are finished. “We will be holding monthly exhibits in this space starting in December/January, and are looking forward to being in Blueback Square. We’re very greatful that they let us utilize this empty space while the Saltbox is being renovated” said Roxanne Stachelek, the Art league’s Executive Director.
The Saltbox Building, originally the Woodruff-Allen House, was built in 1759 as a farmhouse. It was acquired by the town in 1943 as a caretakers house for the Buena Vista golf course. The Art League acquired a long term lease to the building from the town in 1976 for $1 a year, and renovated the building for use as office and gallery space. The classic Saltbox building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
The West Hartford Art League was founded in 1934 and held its first meetings in the little red schoolhouse building at the corner of Mountain and Buena Vista Roads that it now uses for art classes. The League has over 600 members from over 50 towns throughout CT. It was incorporated as 501 (c) 3 in 1939 and now offers four sessions of visual art classes through-out the year for all levels of artists, in addition to monthly exhibits of local and regional artists in its two galleries. It also offers a summer art camp every July for students ages 5 – high school.
