ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

We think art enhances our community, and since 2006 when we commissioned “The Bear,” to Cornwall artist Peter Busby, the West Hartford Art League has led an effort to place public work by CT artists on public land for everyone to see and enjoy. 2008, and 2013, saw the creation of our Bus Shelter murals, which we produced again in 2020. Scroll down to see the ten artists and locations in progress now. In 2011, we completed a fundraising effort to purchase the three bronze horses by Karen Petersen that we installed on Memorial Road in Blue Back Square in 2008.

We installed 'Susan', a large portrait by sculptor Philip Grausman on our grounds in September 2012, as well as a community mural, completed by attendees of ArtWalk 2012 which was installed in the Town Hall lobby that November.  ArtWalk 2013 saw the development of another community project, "Wheel Art", which is in installed on the side of our Saltbox building on Buena Vista Road. This project was developed by West Hartford artist Anita Balkun and created by members of the community.

2019 saw the creation of an outdoor mural on our grounds based on four quilts designed by Hartford quilter Ed Johnetta Miller. Each quilt has been recreated twice in paint onto a wall on Buena Vista Road that spans over 100 feet wide.

In addition, the four original quilts created by Ed Johnetta are being displayed on loan in public venues throughout West Hartford. They are currently installed at The West Hartford Public Library, Charter Oak Elementary School, and in the Saltbox Gallery at the West Hartford Art League.

In 2022, we commissioned eleven artists to paint ART Barrier Murals, with the Town of West Hartford, on the concrete barriers used to expand outdoor dining in West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square.

And in the fall of 2022 we worked with LaSalle Road Partners II, and RLM Properties, to commission artist Corey Pane to create a “Welome to West Hartford” mural in West Hartford Center.

BUS SHELTERS

Commissioned during the 2020 pandemic as a way to bring art onto the street during the quarantine, two bus shelters ( Michelle Hawran and Trae Brooks) have been removed due to graffiti and other issues but the remaining eight can still be viewed in person.

In 2019, The West Hartford Art League commissioned artist Ed Johnetta Miller, to create four quilts, which would be reproduced on a wall on our grounds as mural. Artists Brian Colbath, Lindaluz Carillo, and Sarah Warda were hired to paint the quilt on a 100 foot long wall on Buena Vista Road. The four quilts have been installed in public locations in West Hartford and will be moved every three years.

We commissioned this mural at 977 Farmington Ave, for LaSalle Road Partners II and RLM Properties in September of 2022 to artist Corey Pane. Its painted on the side wall at 977 Farmington Ave, leading into the parking area in West Hartford Center.
